I'm through quite a chunk of The Changing Light at Sandover. Been wanting to buy this book for years, ever since I heard about the ouija board conceit. I held off because of a sneaking suspicion that I'd like it too much. The ouija thing is right up my alley: ooh, it's kinda magical, la-dee-dah. I eat that stuff for breakfast.

But I think I just like the telegrammatic nature of the messages from beyond. All caps, sans punctuation, they remind me of the archy and mehitabel poems (one of my earliest and most enduring bits of literature) wherein archy speaks with a ghost named clarence who complains that some medium has got his number, and keeps yanking him back from the beyond to deliver messages to old ladies. There's something weirdly live about writing that forces you to fill in the punctuation -- at least it demands a modicum of engagement on your part. The language is lively anyway; Merrill manages a range of tones and voices, and succeeds in telling a story in a not particularly overt fashion.

Plus, it's certainly keeping me entertained longer than that dang Harry Potter book, which I finished in a grueling, seven-hour, "just the plot, ma'am" session.

The Sociable Monowheel!

I don't know . . . those guys look less than amicable. More like exhausted, and possibly escaped from a prison camp.

Having rented out my room, I now face the flip-side of apartment hell, looking for my own place. Last time I tried to find an apartment in DC, I felt like the red-headed stepchild. As a law student, I was that most dreaded entity -- the person without a real job.

So far I've just been calling people trying to set up appointments to see various apartments, but this time around it's not so bad -- you would be amazed how previously grouchy people perk up when your answer to "What do you do?" is "I'm a lawyer." It's like apartment magic!
