My poem, "Ye Mariners of England," gets a little plug over at the Poetry Foundation Blog, along with other work from the latest issue of The Hat. Woot!

Halloween on the Hill

Eight bags of candy in an hour. Whoosh. Lots of superheroes, vaguely "scary guys" (black robes and fright masks), fairy princesses, pre-teens raiding their older sisters' closets. Scariest costume? A constitutional amendment to permit George W. Bush to sit for a third term as president. Best costume? Giant box of movie popcorn, complete with red-and-white striped bag and yellow balloons all over as the popcorn. My costume? I thought I had none, but a small, tow-headed crimefighter implied that I "look just like Joseph's mom." So I went for Halloween as Joseph's mom.

Overheard on Halloween:

Cruella de Ville (not kidding), talking to her friend the mad scientist:

"Oh, you're cold? I might lend you my coat...if you weren't covered in blood!"

And the saddest little ninja:

"Happy Halloween! I'm allergic to peanuts!"

Whimsical handlettered art made from internet spam? O seeker in the void, all things are possible.

Small Child, re: ATM machine

"If I put my socks into this machine, they would turn into more socks."
