I'm blowin' this popsicle stand, kids. Time to skedaddle and get me gone and up to places elsewhere for the weekend. Places with rivers and yards and barbecues. I'll check back in with y'alls on Monday, when I will likely have tinysides to give you.
I don't know where your long weekend will take you, but if it takes you to NYC, you should go see Shafer. He and a buncha other people are reading tomorrow at the Four Faced Liar, and he's making Screaming Pygmies, a beverage that, frankly, sounds absolutely awful. To achieve optimum results, you should drink at least six.

Maureen Thorson: telling it like it is in the 1940s.
Hat tip to JE, which is an apt phrase, considering how closely I was coveting a white panama in a shop window today.

Ran into cute gay guy who lives downstairs on my way out. Walk of shame? No idea, but he had an overnight bag with him and looked terrified as he ran in through the gate.
6 a.m. belongs to joggers and dogs. Happiest dog in the world: big old hound dog bounding happily alongside his master, who was running, not jogging. Booking it.
Summertime ritual watch: first magnolia blossoms; currant trees are raining berries down on the sidewalk.
Overheard in DC -- two fratly guys at the rose garden next to the Smithsonian:
"Dude, this flower smells soooo good."
"Dude, this one smells better."
"Dude."

Mr. Pringles (hint: press the buttons up at top) is totally awesome, and the first Johnny the Stupid Robot is the best, particularly my sister's fantastic work on the sound effects.
I started working on Vlad Drac -- Mod Tropicando. Someday I will dredge up for you my totally awesome character studies of a sombrero-clad vampire. But not tonight. Tonight I must renew my acquaintance with blessed sleep.

The song of the day is The Jones Street Boys' "Last Time."
I brought my workout clothes home and now I can attempt to jog in the morning. Jogging will make me feel like crap, but it will be good for me. At least for a while. Jogging and working out in a gym are two of those things that appear to defy even my seemingly infinite capacity for doing things I don't like. I should take a dance class instead. I would at least have half a chance of keeping up with that.
Anyway, if I can just make it through the next few days, I get to go canoeing in New Jersey with Shanna. There is some kind of DC rowing club that is doing novice classes. I'm thinking of doing that. The few times I have rowed anything (rowboats, not those sleek little skiff things that crew people use) I have enjoyed it immensely. I don't know if that is Tom Sawyer Syndrome, but there it is. I like mucking about in boats and using them to go to destinations.
In gardening news: fish emulsion has been administered to the summer squash to counter the sudden onset of blossom-end rot. Bone meal is the next step. I like the idea that my plants eat animals and then I eat the plants and later, someday, the plants will eat me. I am the plant and the plant is me and we are cannibals.

That actually makes a lot of sense.

Actually, couldn't wait. Just ate the grapefruit. It was wonderful.

I bought a swimsuit today. Completely impractical for any actual swimming I might do, but looks better on me than the old one, which was sized and shaped for a much younger me. Also a pair of shorts...I never wear shorts because I hate my legs. Poor legs...it's time to take you jogging.

My first time as cocurator of In Your Ear went well. I ate my first-ever fish taco. I watched, and participated in, some slightly uncoordinated dancing. A new and completely undefined movement called Clamp Poetics was created.
I also bought my first pair of sunglasses. Here I am incognito as a large and terrible insect:

And here is a pea pod from my garden:

Summertime Ritual Watch
First mowing of grass in park = first fresh-mown grass smell of season.
I have harvested and devoured three pea pods off my pea plants.
Honeysuckle has ripened -- yellowy older flowers have sweetest nectar.
House is full of giant fresh bouquets of Sweet William. Yay!
