My mother just decided to go ice-skating on a frozen puddle in the yard. Pictures will be posted Monday.

I have arrived in Rhode Island, where I am catching up on seven million neglected emails. I will also be reading tinyside subs, working on my seven million neglected orange poems, and eating cookies. Many, many cookies.

Mmm...cookies.

Anyone want to start a Beatles singalong club? We could graduate to other bands/songs later, but the Beatles is good to start with, because pretty much everyone carries around at least half the catalog permanently branded in their brains. I'm not the best singer, so you have to be able to forgive someone who tends to drift off-key.

I have very good memories of driving around in high school with a friend of mine who was also kind of tone deaf, and since we were both tone deaf, we could sing really loud and totally get into it, and neither of us would admonish the other for sucking. Points for enthusiasm, man. The offkey soul is equally joyous in of itself, if not such a joy for others to hear.

Estoy Aqui

For today's random filler post, I have picked up a disused and dirty meme that filtered through the non-poetry blogosphere a few weeks ago. To wit, I have used the shuffle function on Das iPod to predict my future, through song titles. And yes, to answer your question, I have no inner resources.

* What does next year have in store for me? Sound of Settling (Death Cab for Cutie) Oh, well, that's just great.
* What does my love life look like? July, July (Decemberists). Now I don't know if I should look for something to happen in July or December.
* What do I say when life get hard? Don't Let's Start (TMBG).
* What do I think of when I get up in the morning? Spiders (Yeah Yeah Yeahs). Well, I suppose I sometimes think of spiders.
* What song will I dance to at my wedding? So Far Away (Social Distortion) Well, a wedding is probably very far away for me at this point, but I would also really like to dance to this at whatever wedding I might have, so yeah.
* What do I want for my career? South Australia (The Pogues). I would like to go Australia, or be a professional drunkard Irish punk rocker, so yes yes yes.
* Favorite saying? You Gotta Believe (Rose Royce and the Pointer Sisters).
* Favorite place? Crescent City (Emmylou Harris). I've only been there once. I took a gypsy cab to the Superdome.
* What do I think of my parents? Such Great Heights (The Postal Service). Awwwww.
* Where would I go on a first date? Shady Lane (Pavement). Sounds okay, but not if it's shady in the sense of sketchy, rather than simply in shadow.
* Drug of Choice? Mexican God (Robyn Hitchcock). Um, no comment?
* How do I describe myself? Atom Bomb (Fluke). Well, maybe a very very very tiny atom bomb on a miniature planet peopled entirely by hoos.
* What is the thing I like doing the most? Velvet Pants (Propellerheads). Heeeeee.
* What is my state of mind like at the moment? The Blues are Still Blue (Belle & Sebastian).
* How will I die? I Know What I Know (Paul Simon). Apparently, knowledge will kill me.
* Song they'll play at my funeral? Ballroom Blitz (The Damned). That would actually be great.
* What song will I put as the subject of this post? Estoy Aqui (Shakira). She is so awesome in Spanish.

So there you are. I know my future, and you have dipped into the extremely white, nerdy, hipstery place that is my iPod. I am nothing more than my demographic. Alas.

Yesterday at Borders I uncovered one of the oddest things to grace my field of vision for a long time. I purchased a large book called the "Symbol Sourcebook," which purports to be an authoritative guide to international graphic symbols, as used by all kinds of industries. The introduction is by, of all people, Buckminster Fuller, and both the prose style and thoughts expressed are beautifully wacky. Here are some select portions:

"...it is implicit that the present discoveries of the electromagnetic behaviors of the brain and its local nerve system controls by mind will eventuate in telepathy's being graduated from society's assessment of it as mystical-magical phenomenon to an everyday communication facilty."

"Thus humans can be liberated to use their own cosmically powerful faculties to communicate what needs to be done in local Universe, as humans are uniquely capable of doing -- and uniquely advantaged to do -- by the phenomenon love and the truthfully thinking mind."

Then I flip the book to page 87, which presents me with the alchemical symbol for saltpeter. Fabulous.
